Welcome to HotelGuide.Networks' directory of hotels and hotel reviews for Roanoke, Virginia!

Roanoke -- capital of the Blue Ridge Mountains and Star City of the South -- was for generations known as Big Lick, a hunting area where wildlife gathered at salt marshes. Eventually the town was renamed "Rawrenock" -- Indian for beads worn and traded by the natives -- when the Shenandoah Valley Railroad brought growth. In 1882, Roanoke became a crossroads for the railroad, eventually becoming the Norfolk and Western Railway. Rapid development led to charter as the City of Roanoke in 1884. Roanoke's historic market remains vibrant as one of the nation's oldest, while still anchoring downtown commerce. Roanoke, now a center for transportation, distribution, trade, manufacturing, health care, entertainment, recreation, attractions and conventions, has three times won the "All-American City" designation.

Roanoke Valley golf courses are among the nation's most scenic, the Appalachian Trail is renowned for hiking allure, and the scenic Blue Ridge Parkway is as popular with cyclists as with motorists. Smith Mountain Lake teems with fishing, sailing, and other water-sports. Annual events include downtown's Railway Festival and the Virginia Championship Chili Cook-off. Among attractions are the Virginia Museum of Transportation, the Mill Mountain Zoo, and the Booker T. Washington National Monument, set in a reconstructed tobacco plantation. The city's most visible attraction is its star, a 100-foot-high illuminated steel and concrete structure, serving as a beacon of friendliness atop Mill Mountain for more than 40 years. Identifying Roanoke as the "Star City of the South," its glow often can be seen for a 60-mile radius and is an aviation landmark. Greater Roanoke has more than 6,000 rooms in lodges, bed and breakfasts, inns, motels, and conference hotels.
